Achieve a Brighter & Whiter Smile in Encinitas, CA

Do your teeth have unsightly stains? Have you bought a drugstore teeth whitening kit and were left with disappointing results? At McElroy Smiles by Design, we offer professional teeth whitening services to bring your teeth up to eight shades whiter. Whether your teeth have been stained due to age, trauma, or medication, Dr. McElroy and our team of cosmetic specialists are here to help!

What Can Leave Our Teeth Vulnerable To Staining?

As you get older, your teeth naturally darken and become stained. These stains deepen over time from the foods and drinks you consume, as well as from other potential factors such as smoking or tartar buildup. Luckily, our expert Encinitas cosmetic dentists can safely and effectively restore your dazzling, smile with our personalized teeth whitening solution.

Foods and beverages — Coffee, tea, wine, soda, and starchy foods such as pizza, pasta, and potatoes can lead to tooth staining. Acidic foods (lemons, coffee, etc) can also wear down the enamel on your teeth.

Tobacco use — Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco consistently can easily stain your teeth.

Oral trauma — A sports injury, an auto accident, or other facial trauma can disturb enamel formation in children and discolor adult teeth as well.

Aging — As we age, the outer layer of tooth enamel starts to wear away, exposing the yellow dentin underneath. This leaves our teeth vulnerable to the damage they were once protected from.

Genetics — Thicker and whiter enamel runs in some families, while others are more unlucky and are left susceptible to yellow teeth.

Environment — During tooth formation, too much fluoride from high levels in water or excessive use of fluoride toothpaste and rinses can cause fluorosis or white spots on the teeth.

Poor oral hygiene — No one has perfect dental hygiene, but brushing and flossing regularly shouldn’t be skipped. The longer food and beverages sit on teeth, the more time they have to stain.

Taking certain medications — Certain prescribed and common medications such as painkillers and antibiotics can lead to tooth discoloration over time. Certain medical treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, also list discolored teeth as a side effect.

What is Kör Whitening?

Kör is an outpatient whitening process designed to make teeth whitening convenient and effective. Unlike other teeth whitening methods, the Kör system can fully restore teeth to their natural color thanks to their ability to absorb bleaching factors. This is done by allowing pigments and stain molecules to be fully flooded out by bleaching factors.

As a result, stain molecules are broken down into small colorless and white particles. This allows you to enjoy all of your favorite foods and beverages while maintaining your teeth’s vibrant color.

Kör Whitening Process

You might have tried over-the-counter whitening treatments in the past, waiting hours for sub-par results, only for the treatment to last for a few months. KöR products are different, as results appear swiftly and can last a lifetime.

Here’s how it works:

  • During your initial consultation, Dr. McElroy will evaluate your oral health condition before determining if teeth whitening is right for you.
  • From there, we’ll provide you with a KöR Teeth Whitening kit to take home.
  • After you leave our Encinitas office, place your KöR Teeth Whitening gel in the refrigerator.
  • Before bedtime, brush and floss your teeth as normal.
  • In your custom whitening trays, apply a small dot of the whitening gel on each tooth.
  • Place the whitening trays on your teeth and gently press to disperse the whitening gel.
  • When you awake, remove the trays and rinse with water, using your toothbrush to remove any excess whitening gel.
  • Repeat this process every night for two weeks or your desired shade is achieved.

Sapphire Whitening™

Sapphire teeth whitening is a safe and gentle way to achieve the bright, healthy smile you’ve always wanted. Sapphire whitening can make your smile up to twelve shades whiter in one visit to our Encinitas, CA office!

Sapphire offers two kinds of treatment: an in-office chairside treatment and a take-home kit. During an initial consultation, you and Dr. McElroy can discuss your needs and decide which treatment is best for you.

Chairside Treatment

Our chairside treatment is performed in our Encinitas office. Before our cosmetic dentist can whiten your teeth, our hygienists will remove any plaque and debris via routine cleaning. If we detect any signs of gum inflammation or tooth decay, we’ll provide the necessary treatment before moving on with your tooth whitening procedure.

Dr. McElroy applies the whitening gel for either 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the severity of the staining. The timing will be determined during your consultation after our dentist has examined your teeth. Sapphire whitening gel lightens teeth by approximately seven shades in 30 minutes and 12 shades in 60 minutes.

Take-home Kits

Sapphire take-home kits are comparable to in-office treatments and offer a convenient solution. This treatment is often used for its cost-effectiveness. Many patients also prefer it because it allows them a further degree of control. For optimal results, the whitening gel should be worn for three minutes over 10 to14 days. Everything you need to whiten the teeth is included in the kit, including gel, syringes, customized trays, and Sapphire Brilliance toothpaste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are discolored teeth unhealthy?

Not necessarily. While poor oral hygiene can contribute to yellowed or discolored teeth, it is far from the only reason your teeth lose their luster. Your teeth can be in peak health and still become discolored due to age, tobacco use, or oral trauma.

Will whitening affect my fillings or crowns?

If you have older fillings, crowns, or other restorations, these whitening systems will only work to improve the appearance of the natural tooth enamel, so you won’t notice any changes in those restorations. We recommended that you have those restorations replaced after a whitening treatment so they match the new and improved color of the rest of your smile.

Are Yellow Teeth Preventable?

There are a few natural ways to help prevent teeth from turning yellow:

  • Avoiding foods and beverages that stain teeth is a great way to start.
  • Brushing and flossing twice a day can also help your teeth stay white.
  • Always do your best to protect teeth from trauma, which may involve wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth or a mouth guard if you play sports.

Of course, it’s possible to do all of these things and still have discolored teeth because of genetics. Aging is also a contributing factor, as the internal, living tissue of the tooth ages naturally and becomes discolored over time. The best solution for this issue is to use a permanent teeth whitening system from expert dentists in Encinitas, CA.
