Gum Therapy Can Help
The goal of gum therapy is to eliminate the underlying cause of gum inflammation. Gum therapy removes dental plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) to give your gums the opportunity to heal.
Gum therapy includes two procedures: scaling and root planing. Periodontal scaling removes calculus, plaque, and stains from the crown and root surfaces of your teeth. Root planing eliminates roughened cementum and surface dentin that is permeated with calculus, microorganisms, and their toxins.
The combination of these two procedures are often referred to as deep cleaning and can be performed using both ultrasonic and hard instruments. After a root planing and scaling procedure, we may prescribe medication to help treat any infection.
Causes of Gum Disease
There are various causes of gum disease. Smoking, oral piercings, excessive sugar intake, poor brushing habits, and inconsistent flossing can all lead to gum deterioration. Some mouths are simply just more prone to gum disease, even when you do everything correctly.
As your gums deteriorate, bad bacteria and food particles have access to the roots of your teeth, causing damage below the surface. When left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious dental problems, including tooth loss. If caught early, however, gum disease can be resolved before your teeth have a chance to suffer.
