Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
You have been told from a very young age to brush your teeth twice a day, but chances are you skip on brushing every now and then. By doing so, you are increasing your risk for the development of tooth decay and gum disease. You need to brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes to ensure you are cleaning each surface of your teeth.
Floss Your Teeth Daily
Too many people underestimate the importance of flossing daily. Brushing your teeth is not enough to prevent gum disease. You need to floss in between each tooth one a day using an ADA-approved dental floss. Be sure to hug your tooth with the dental floss while you gently extend the floss to the gum line and back up to the top of the tooth.
Avoid Sugars and Starches
The foods you eat can damage your teeth, such as sugary and starchy foods, which cause cavities. Limit your consumption of foods and drinks the increase your risk for tooth decay. Eat a well-balanced diet for a healthy body and mouth.
Visit the Dentist Twice a Year
Your home oral hygiene is only half of the care you need. You need to visit your dentist twice a year for a regular cleaning and checkup as recommended by the American Dental Association. With regular checkups and cleanings, you will promote your oral health all year.
Repair Damaged Teeth
If your teeth become damaged, do not delay treatment. The longer you wait, the more extensive the damage will become. Have damaged teeth repaired immediately to protect the health and beauty of the teeth.
Stop Bad Habits
If you have bad habits that can damage the teeth, such as smoking, alcohol use, or using your teeth as tools, stop these habits right away. By making simple changes to your lifestyle, you will help to ensure your teeth last a lifetime.
